The Forstner bit is optimized for woodworking applications to cut
exceptionally precise with a minimum amount of tear-out. The bit is ideal for drilling flat-bottomed holes for many
hardware installations.
The Forstner bit is guided by the wide outside rim, whereas other wood
drill bits are guided by the tip. For this reason, the drill bit can be used
with a drill press to drill angled or partially overlapped holes.
How to sharpen a Forstner bit
Tools required for sharpening:
Diamond file (600 mesh)
Mini rotary tool with a cone shaped grinding point
Permanent marker
Step 1:
Use a permanent marker, and colour in the inside bevelled edge of the
Forstner bit.
Step 2:
Use a mini rotary tool with a cone shaped grinding point and lightly grind
the bevel to expose the steel from under the coloured in area.
Step 3:
Use the diamond file on the inside flat edge of the Forstner bit. Count the
amount of sharpening strokes made by the file and repeat on the other side.
Never sharpen a Forstner bit on the outside circumference as it will change the bit&s size.
